The Winter Solstice Ritual

A sensory practice for stillness, illumination, and renewal. This ritual uses a self-igniting charcoal disc, which requires a little patience and presence to light. That slowness is part of the rhythm of the practice—an invitation to move with intention rather than urgency.

1. Prepare your altar.
Lay the altar cloth on a stable, heat-safe surface. Place the round slate tile in the center, then set one of the small high-fired clay discs on top. This creates a safe heat buffer for your burn.

2. Light the charcoal.
Hold a quick-light charcoal disc with tongs or set it on the clay disc. Touch a match or lighter to the edge and keep the flame there until you see crackling sparks travel across the surface. This part takes a little patience—stay with it.
Once the disc begins to heat, allow it to turn gray on top (about 1 minute).

3. Add the resin incense.
Crumble a few small pieces of the Winter Solstice resin blend and sprinkle them onto the center of the charcoal. As the fragrance rises—myrrh, cedar, mugwort, lavender, orange peel—notice the shift from stillness to warmth.

4. Set your intention.
