I’m Alicia Taylor Low, a Berkeley artist working primarily in glass, clay, and mixed media. My work ranges from custom stained-glass pet portraits to sculptural and conceptual pieces exploring connection, emotion, nature, and what it means to be human.
About Me
Mosaic art, connection, and an unexpected creative life
I came to art later in life and without formal art training. For most of my career, I worked in analytics, work that relied on observation, pattern recognition, problem-solving, and making sense of complicated information. I never imagined that after retiring, those same instincts would find an entirely different expression.
Then I discovered mosaic.
From fragments to something whole
What began with pieces of stained glass quickly became much more than something I enjoyed doing. I was fascinated by the process of taking separate fragments of different colors, shapes, textures, and reflections and figuring out how they could work together to become something whole. I kept making. I kept learning. And somewhere along the way, I discovered the artist inside me.
Capturing who they are
Today, custom pet portraits are an important part of my work. I create each portrait by hand from stained glass, using photographs and the stories people share with me to capture not just what an animal looks like, but something of who they are. My portraits have found homes throughout the United States and as far away as Australia, England, Canada, and Asia.
Following the idea
My personal artwork continues to evolve. Mosaic led me to ceramics, sculpture, and mixed media. My ongoing Celestial Faces series brings these materials together as I explore the ideas that keep pulling at me: our connection to animals and nature, emotion, spirituality, identity, and the strange and beautiful experience of being human.
I’m particularly interested in what happens when seemingly separate things come together: glass and clay, realism and abstraction, thought and intuition, fragments and wholeness. I don't feel compelled to stay within the boundaries of one medium. I follow the idea and use whatever materials help me express it. You can see more of that exploration in my gallery.
An unexpected creative life
There is still something magical to me about making art. I didn't grow up expecting this life, and I certainly didn't expect to find myself becoming more creatively curious and ambitious as I got older.
But here I am.
And I'm very grateful for it.
